Voilà, le championnat démarre réellement, les concurrents commencent par sortir leur avion de secours pour le contrôle des modèles, avion, que personne n’envisage d’utiliser bien sûr, mais c’est le règlement, il faut le faire contrôler aussi.
Here we are ! The Championship starts! It’s time for the contestants to present their spare planes to the judges. Nobody is expecting to use them, but they have to be checked too. Rules are rules…
Je découvre que Jacky Pigout possède un Classic Jaune et rouge de toute beauté. Il est si beau que j’hésite à voler avec me dira-t-il, c’était celui de mon fils lorsqu’il volait. Comme je le comprends.
I find out that Jacky Pigout possesses an amazing yellow and red “classic”. It is so beautiful that he will admit being reluctant to fly it… It was his son’s plane… Quite understandable!
Le contrôle s’effectue rapidement, on vérifie que chaque modèle ne dépasse pas d’un carré de 2mx2m. On le pèse, et on lui colle un autocollant sensé éviter la fraude. Pour le team et la vitesse, les moteurs sont également contrôlés, cylindrée exacte, taille des réservoirs….Tout cela terminé, on va faire une photo de l’équipe devant un vieil Antonov qui aura beaucoup été photographié pendant ces quelques jours.
The checking is quick and simple: the judges control that each plane is no more than 2mx2m in size and check the weight. Then they apply a “verified” sticker.
For the “team” and “speed” planes, they also check the engine, the size of the tank and the cylinder capacity. Once it’s done, the team poses in front of an old Antonov for the photo. This old Antonv has been very popular these days!
Arrive la cérémonie d’ouverture officielle, nous aurons droit à une fanfare militaire, que chaque délégation suivra précédées de charmantes militaires polonaises…. La nôtre est une vraie poupée…. Polonaise….. nous n’en méritions pas moins. Bien sûr il y aura des discours…. En polonais et anglais…..
Here comes the Opening ceremony ! A military band plays, followed by each delegation accompanied by charming Polish militaries. Ours is a real beauty: “because we’re worth it!?!”. There will be opening speeches as well, in Polish and in English.
Puis se sera une polonaise dansée par de charmantes et charmants jeunes gens en habits et robes de bal.
There will also be a Polish dance performed by charming youngsters in ball gowns.
Une patrouille survolera le terrain pour terminer cette cérémonie. Seul bémol, une démonstration d’interception d’une voiture à un contrôle routier, avec balles à blanc ne me paraîtra pas très adaptée, un avis que plusieurs partageront avec moi.
An air patrol will fly over the field at the end of the ceremony. The only unpleasant thing: a demonstration of car interception at a road check point that was, for many people including me, totally unnecessary and irrelevant.
A côté du camp français, quelques allemands, dont le revendeur de bougies assez particulières, (pour moi en tout cas)… les bougies Raphaël, je ne connaissais pas, le filament est remplacé par un petit tube de platine, cela donne (paraît-il) une meilleure carburation, ET à bas, ET à haut régime…. J’en demande le prix…. AH ! OUI ! le prix aussi carbure bien….. Mais j’ai quand même un doute, elles semblent avoir des culots longs, et n’ayant pas mon Stalker avec moi, je ne peux pas vérifier si ce culot n’est pas trop long, alors, dans le doute, je m’abstiens….
Next to the French camp, some Germans, amongst whom a spark plug retailer. He sells specific spark plugs, The Raphael (which I didn’t know). The filament is replaced by a little platinum tube which causes a better carburation, at low and high regime. I asked for the price… Ok, the price is high too!!! Anyway, they seem to be too big for my “Stalker”… And I cannot check for I haven’t got it with me… so I decided not to give it a go…
En vitesse, démonstrations magistrales des « états-uniens ». J’assiste à un vol officiel de Hugues, impressionnant ! remplissage du réservoir, démarrage, décollage, et hop pratiquement 300km/h. Pas une hésitation, ni un cafouillage, çà tourne bien, c’est tip top…. pas besoin de régler, de modifier… l’avion arrive et fait un temps….. du grand art ! In « speed », brilliant demos from the Americans! I attend the official fight of Hugues: impressive!!! Filling of the tank, taking off and, in a flash, the planes flies at 300km/h. No hesitation, no mess, everything is perfect, not need for adjustments… A high-level-flight!!! This is great art!
Jeudi soir nous sommes tous conviés au restaurant, Matthieu viendra tout spécialement nous chercher mon épouse et moi, et nous ramènera au camping.
Nous y fêterons son anniversaire, et aurons droit à un discours très ampoulé et romancé de Georges Surugue….. par contre celui de Matthieu sera des plus concis…. (humour)….
On Thursday night we are invited to the restaurant. Mathieu will kindly take us (my wife and I) there, and will take us back to the camp afterwards. We’ll celebrate his birthday at the restaurant. Geaorge Surugue will give a lyrical and pompous speech… Matthieu will deliver quite a short one (just kidding)…
En team, je suis témoin d’un accident vraiment regrettable, tout à coup, l’avion de l’équipe Roland/Thierry percute le sol sans aucune raison apparente, c’est une catastrophe…. Une fois les vols terminés, nous allons aux nouvelles, il semblerait qu’une attache s’est rompue, et que sous le choc, le palonnier a traversé la face interne du fuselage, le moteur semble avoir souffert…. Leur meilleur moteur ! tant de travail ruiné en une fraction de seconde ! c’est vraiment moche, il leur reste leur avion de secours, moins performant bien évidemment….
In « team », I am the sad witness of an accident. All of the sudden, Roland/Thierry ‘s plane crashes without any apparent reason, it’s a nightmare!
Once the flights are over, we go and get some news… It seems that one clip broke and that it caused the “palonnier” to pass through the intern part of the “fuselage”. The engine seems to have suffered too… It was their best engine! An incredible amount of work ruined in a few seconds! That’s so unfair!
Of course they still have their spare plane but it’s not as good as this one…
En acrobatie, autre accident, pour leur vol de calibrage, les juges demandent à une charmante pilote Mongole d’effectuer ce vol, et malheureusement, elle passe trop près du sol, voulant bien faire sans doute, et arrache son train d’atterrissage…. sans autre dommage, après une nuit de réparation, cet avion participera aux vols suivants….
In « acrobatie », another accident. For the « calibrage » flight, the judges ask a charming Mongolian pilote to fly her plane. Unfortunately, she flies too low and tears off the landing gear… After a night up, repairing, the plane is ready to fly again!
Voilà, je dois quitter Wloclawek, je suis attendu par des amis à Varsovie pour le baptême d’un petit Tomasz…. Et oui, c’est déjà mon cinquième voyage en Pologne, une autre vie, moniteur de spéléo plongée, j’ai de nombreux stagiaires qui sont aujourd’hui des amis…. J’irai également plonger à Mszczonow dans la fosse la plus profonde d’Europe…. mais bon, çà c’est une autre facette de mes activités….

Now, I have to leave Wloclawek. Some friends of mine are waiting for me in Varsow for the christening of their little Tomasz. It’s my fifth travel to Poland. As a cave-diving teacher I’ve already come to Poland several times and many of my former students have become my friends. I’ll also take this opportunity to go and dive in the European deepest diving pit in Mszczonow. But this is another story, another hobby, another part of my life…
